What is family health insurance?
Family health insurance is a single policy that covers multiple family members under one plan. It typically uses a shared sum insured (also called a floater), which means any covered member can use the entire insured amount during the policy year.
Instead of buying separate policies for each member, a family floater plan offers broader coverage at a lower combined premium. It usually covers the policyholder, spouse, children, and sometimes dependent parents.
Examples
Young couple: A couple aged 28 and 27 with a ₹10 lakh family floater pays around ₹12,000 a year, covering both under a single shared sum insured.
Family with children: A family of four — two adults and two children — can get a ₹15 lakh floater with maternity and newborn cover for about ₹22,000 a year.
Senior citizens: A plan covering two parents aged 60+ may cost more, but add-on senior citizen plans with domiciliary and OPD cover make treatment affordable.
